OWNER WARNED BY BELL From Oar Oivn Correspondent NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. When he heard the bell of his till ring while he was in a back room, Joseph Vella, a restatirant proprietor, of New Ply-mouth, rushed out, found the till open and a stranger leaving in a hurry. He grabbed the man by the shoulder and as he did so a pound note fell on to the floor. Yesterday Hugh McCullough was charged before Mr. R. W. Tate. S.M., with the theft of £1 from Vella. He was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprison men t. In giving evidence, V ella said he was perfectly sure that the note which defendant threw on the floor when witness made his. appearance was taken from the till, as it was a custom of his to keep only one pound in the till. He had been caught once before by leaving too much cash in the till, and was not going to be a loser again.
