Final Trials at Riccarton

CHIDES FINE EFFORT PAGANELLI GOES FAST (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Very heavy fog enveloped the training tracks during the early hours of the morning and it was impossible to clock the early workers; but it lifted long before the breakfast hour, and then some of the most impressive gallops were witnessed by a large crowd of spectators. The course proper, with the trestles out about 35ft from the rails, was again in use. Chide completed his Cup preparation today with a brilliant gallop over 10 furlongs. He ran that distance in 2.9, and for the last nine furlongs occupied 1.54 4-5. Joined by Aleprisant at the mil© post, the Cup favourite moved most attractively, and at the end he appeared to be travelling comfortably alongside his companion. It was a great Cup trial, and, as trainers of long standing at Riccarton say, “if he does not win the Cup then little reliance can be placed in track gallops.” Concentrate also was an outstanding performer. With Spearmiss he ran from the nine furlongs barrier in 1.54, and for -the last mile registered the very fast time of 1.42. Concentrate was ridden by a feather-weight and was all out at the end, but it was a gallop of rare merit. He is going to prove a most formidable rival in Saturday’s big race. Paganelli a Star . Paganelli was the star sprinter. He ran five furlongs in 1.1, and came home the last four furlongs in 48. Chide galloped before the fog lifted, so that his mile and a-quarter in 2.9, in humid atmospheric conditions that did not altogether assist him, was a rare effort. With A. Eastwood, his Cup pilot, in the saddle, he broke away from the 10-furlongs post on the course proper, and at the mile post was joined by Aleprisant. Down the back of the course the horses went out of view, and it was not till nearing the judge’s box that they were again sighted. At that stage Chide appeared to be doing his work in great style, and it was very apparent that he was holding the Derby candidate at the end. As a rule Chide is a lazy track worker, but as an indication that he is as fit as hands can make him he infused great dash into his work this morning, and when he pulled up after making fast time he would not have blown the proverbial match out. Although Chide has not had the racing that some Cup rivals have had, there can be no doubts whatever about his fitness, and on Saturday he will strip one of the best prepared candidates in the race. Unbeatable ? Riccarton track watchers declare him as unbeatable and it is certain that he will start one of the hottest favourites for years. Honour and Jaloux were the first to launch out on the speed test, but the fog was very heavy when they galloped and it was impossible to time their gallop accurately. However, they ran a mile and a-half at a strong pace, but Honour beat his mate home. Goblin Market worked steadily on the plough and on the same track Dutch Aloney was restricted to a three-quarter pace.

Cashier went surprisingly well over 10 furlongs. He covered that distance in 2.11 and finished strongly. Leader and The Viscount galloped five in 1.3 4-5, while Avro, who worked on the plough, ran the last five of the six in 1.4. Alalmsey and Kentish Lady were timed to run home from the seven furlongs on the plough in 1.34. The Stewards’ Handicap candidates. Subdivision and Havering, were matched over six furlongs, but Subdivision ran away from his companion early and was four lengths clear at the end. Subdivision’s time for the six was 1.16 4-5, and he was not all out A- E. Ellis rides Havering in the Stewards’ Handicap. Miss Nightraid and Desert Song ran six furlongs in 1.16 2-5 and Stately wound up her preparation by running a sound mile. Her stable mate Spoon ran a smart half-mile. Hunting Cry was with White Fang during his six furlongs’ gallop. Over that distance he recorded 1.16 and led White Fang by half a length. Ball Dress, on a straight course, ran four furlongs. Over two furlongs farther, Hurly Burly did 1.17 3-5. Improved Northerner

On© of the most improved of the Northerners at present at Riccarton is Paganelli. Since the Trentham meeting the Lord Quex gelding has not marked time. He put up the swiftest five furlongs on Tuesday, but this morning he excelled his previous performance by dashing over five furlongs in 1.1. It was a great effort and the fact that he came home over the last half in 48 shows that he finished full of running. Despite his weight he must have a great chance in the Stewards* Handicap. Eaglet was partnered with Vertigern and Count Palatine over nine furlongs, and for that distance registered 1.59 3-5. There was no pace on early, but over the last furlong Eaglet was going very easily and held an advantage of little more than a length from Count Palatine.. Vertigern was three lengths away. Atholspear and Austerity ran seven in 1.32 1-5, and at the end of four furlongs, which occupied 48 4-5, Princess Betty and Rosy Alorn were The Cup candidates, Amor and Count Cavour, went 10 furlongs. They began slowly, and for the first quarter were merely cantering, but then speed was increased, and for the full journey they registered 2.13 4-5. There was little between the pair, but Count Cavour was a shade in front at the end. All Eyes on Historic All eyes were focussed on Historic when th© crack Northerner came on th© track. He trotted down past the 10 furlongs post with In The Shade and Prodice, and then the trio turned about and set off at a brisk pace. They raced abreast for the greater part of the trial, but Historic held Prodice at the conclusion of the gallop. while In The Shade half a length away behind Prodice. Historic has come into favour with a rush since yesterday, and it is in his favour that his trainer, S. Reid, a sound judge, expects the horse to put up a great race for th© Cup. Historic’s showing in the sprint at Carterton on Saturday was certainly a surprise* to many followers of racing, but apparently Historic is a class galloper, who can both sprint and win over middle distances. He has a big weight to carry at the week-end, but his superior class is going to carry him a long way. Seatown severely trounced Yoma over nine furlongs. He ran that distance in 1.57 4-5, taking 1.44 3-5 for the last mile, but he was far too good for Yoma. It was a most impressive gallop on the part of Seatown and it gained him additional admirers for the Cup. Hoylake, unaided, ran seven in 1.29, a good gallop. Tigrano and Solmuri ran six in 1.16, and at the end of a mile Admiral Drake was showing the way to Merry Alint and King’s Jest. Concentrate Pleases Concentrate put up an especially pleasing performance by running nine furlongs in 1.54 2-5, his best gallop

over that distance. This morning he had Spearmiss and Dolomite as companions, but at the half-mile the imported horse dropped out- Spearmiss and Concentrate were together a furlong from home, but ridden out, Concentrate finished in front of his companion. As the last mile occupied 1.42 it will be seen that both horses finished at a great bat. Concentrate pulled up particularly well and looks in great condition for Saturday’s cilitest. Of course he had only a lightweight in the saddle today. He was receiving poundage from Spearmiss, but that did not detract from the merit of his performance. Consent sprinted four furlongs in 49sec and Great Star did two furlongs in 24sec. Although Great Star has been ruling favourite for the Stewards’ he has not done as well as expected this week. Still, his trainer is hopeful that he will pull off the important sprint race. Talisker led King Midas at the end of six in 1.16 2-5 and over the same distance Royal Parade led Goshawk in 1.17 4-5. Last Mark went with them but was beaten off. Taurua and Vali did six in 1.17 2-5

and Toxeuma recorded 1.17 1-5 for' the same journey. Tray Bond Dangerous After the breakfast hour Tray Bond put up a great gallop over four furlongs. She ran that distance in 47 3-5 and was flying over the closing stages. Tray Bond must be considered a, dangerous rival in the Welcome
