THAMES NOTES
A 20ft whale was washed ashore opposite the hotel at New Brighton last week. The hotel-keeper, Mr. Moore, carved his name on the carcase and a miniature boiling-down works will soon be in full swing. A large afforestation scheme, under which some 50,000 acres at Whangamata (Mercury Bay district) will be planted, has been commenced. Government officials have arrived and a final batch of 100 men is expected by steamer within the next fortnight. The rainfall at Thames for the ten months of the year is 12.46 in, about 6in less than the same period of last year. The fall for October was 3.9 in.; rain fell on 13 days, the heaviest fall, 1.85 in, being on October 23.
