CONSIDERATION IN CASES OF SPEEDING MAGISTRATE’S RULING In dealing with a number of charges of speeding across intersections, in the Onehunga Police Court this, morning, Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., laid down a ruling that the volume of traffic at any particular intersection was a factor to be considered, in addition to the excessive speed of a car. If there were grave elements of danger to other motorists or pedestrians on account of traffic density, the penalty might be as muclf as £5. Speeding across street intersections in Onehunga cost G. N. Hill, 31 miles an hour, 20s; W. Lonegan, 30 miles, 10s; S. P. McDuigan, 30 miles, 10s; Arthur T. Freeman, 31 miles, 20s; J. S. Bertley. 30 miles, 20s; and D. Reddaway. 30 miles, 20s. For having no headlights, Archie W. Montgomerie was fined 20s and costs, and it cost Edward Clayton 10s for carrying a passenger in front of him on a motorcycle. Glenville O’Malley, for having neither headlights nor rear reflector on his pedal bicycle, was lined 10s on each charge. Herbert Montague Herdson pleaded guilty to having employed an unlicensed person to drive his motortruck. The police said accused had sent out his truck with coal and firewood in charge of his son, aged 13, and had taken no notice of two warnings. r ,Mr. Levien remarked that defendant had no business to carry on after the warnings, and fined Herdson £2 and costs.
