FIRST YACHT RACE STARLOCH LEADS FLEET IN The first yacht race of the season sailed on Saturday by the Richmond Gruisingr Club to Beach Haven was won on time allowance by Desdcmona. Starloch was the first in. The race, which was started off Ponsonby Wharf at 3.20 p.m., brought out a field of 15 boats. The course was from the wharf, thence round the Kona buoy off Northcote, thence direct to Beach Haven/ A fair sou’-west wind prevailed. At the fall of the last flag .Wild Wave crossed the line £'rst. Soon afterward came Leveret, with Desdemona not far away. The rest straggled over in the following order: Marere, June, Lois, Starloch, Why Not, Swiftsure, Tamure, Phyllis, Sea Crest, Matariki, .Mowai and Maureen. The boats had a run to the Rona Buoy, which was rounded on the port hand. The order of going round was: Starloch, Desdcmona. Leveret. Lois, Wild Wave, Marere, Why Not. June, Sea Crest, Tamure, Matariki. Swiftsure, Phyllis, Mowai and Maureen. Starloch had a fair lead from the second boat, which in turn was comfortably ahead of the third. On the way to Chelsea Wharf Starloch. tramping along in tine style and holding a good course, gradually increased her lead. At the wharf the order was: {3tarlo« h, Marere. Desdemona. Leveret, Wild Wave. Why Not. June. Sea Crest. Matariki. Swiftsure. Lois, Tamure, Mowai, Phyllis and Maureen. Lois was the first to put in a board, having found it impossible to lay Kauri Point, then about thrpe-quarters of a mile off. Soon afterward most of the smaller boats followed suit as they were bearing too close into the lee shore. They were all assisted by a good tide and made rapid progress, Starloch. still holding well, was able to lay the point on her original course, a very good piece of sailing. The big mullet boat was now well in the lead and looked like winning. At the point the order was: Starloch. Why Not. Marere, Desdemona, Wild Wave and Leveret, with the others coming up smartly.
