CLERGYMEN BANNED
PRAYER-BOOK DISPUTE WITH BISHOP
FORBIDDEN SERVICE USED Times Cable. LONDON, Thursday. The Bishop of Liverpool, Dr. A. A. David, in pronouncing his ban on three of his clergy, used the following words; “l hereby pronounce that our three brethren, by repudiating wiy authority, have set themselves outside our ministerial fellowship, and must there remain until by obedience they are again welcomed thereinto.” The Diocesan Synod had agreed to the ban by 246 votes to 39. The clergy concerned, who are AngloCatholies, are the Revs. Cyril Wilkins, John Derham-Marshali and Arthur Wykes, all of Liverpool.
They had used the forbidden form for the Reservation of the Sacrament. When the bishop demanded the abandonment of the service, which was only applicable to the sick, they replied that on conscientious grounds they were unable to accept his regulation.
Tho ban is the first synodical action on such grounds. The banned clergy attended the meeting of synod. Mr. Wilkins protested that the ban was illegal.
