STEAMER RUNS ASHORE
DANGEROUS POSITION IN TABLE BAY PROBABLY TOTAL WRECK United P.A.- —Pi/ Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. CAPETOWN, Tues. The steamer Hypatia, in the direct cargo service to New York, grounded in a mist on Whale Rock, a mile off Robben Island, at the entrance to Table Bay, at 5 o’clock this morning. She arrived six weeks ago and went as far as Beira, where she loaded a large quantity of copper ore, also loading hides at coast ports. She was fully loaded. Now the steamer is firmly fixed. She has a crew of 75, of whom 15 are white. There was no panic. Two lifeboats were rowed to the mainland, and tugs were sent out for the remainder.
The crew salved the officers’ belongings and the ship’s papers. Owing to the swell, it was impossible to approach the rock- The bottom of the ship is being torn out, and probably she will be a total wreck.
The Hypatia, a steamer of 5,728 tons, was built in 1902 by Palmers Company, Newcastle. She is owned by the British and South American Steam Navigation Company, Limited. Her port of registry is Liverpool.
