BULLER RIVER TRAGEDY

STRONG SWIMMER DROWNED Press Association WESTPORT, Tuesday. An inquest into the death of Charles Salter was held at Tiroroa last evening. Evidence was given that deceased with F. AV. Churchill, went to cross the Duller River in a boat on October 15. He apparently failed to slacken the stern line, with the result that the boat went out into the current almost broadside on and capsized. Churchill managed to cling to the boat until rescued, but Salter was carried downstream and sank. The water was very cold and it is thought he got cramp, as he was a good swimA verdict was returned that death was due to drowning, caused by the boat in which deceased was crossing the river capsizing. There was no direct evidence to show what cajused the boat to capsize.
