WAIPA CLUB

PROGRAMME FOR ANNUAL FIXTURE (Special to THE BLX) TE AWAMUTU, Today. The principal business of the Waipa Racing Club committee on Friday was the consideration of the report of the special committee set up to draft a programme for the coming meeting in December. Mr. W. H. Tims stated that last year’s stakes totalled .£1,120, plus a gold cup valued at £3O. The stakes were then arranged as £935 for first horses, £lls for seconds, and £To for thirds. For the coming year he advocated making the cash’’ stakes total £ 1.160. The apportionment would provide for each winner receiving a minimum of £IOO. .Ur. H. Weald’s total was £1.205, plus a trophy for the chief event, with each race having a minimum of at least £ 100 lor the- winner. He suggested that the hurdle race be conlined to hacks, and that one of the open sprints be changed to a hack raco of a mile or more. Mr. Storey, who was unavoidably absent, had written that he was iii favour of the stakes being the same as last year. This suggestion he would not oppose. Members discussed the subject at length It was pointed out that other c übs had reduced their stakes. One club was offering the winners of some races only £7O. -Eventtudly -Mr. S. A. Empson moved tluit .Mr. limsK draft be approved. " ,th :t trophy valued at 40 guineas.. Phis was agreed to. The course committee was authorised to proceed with the fencing of the recently purchased six acres for a motor parking paddock, and also o.ther fencing. Messrs. W. Old. AV. Brindlc. W. Morrison and C. Crotty were elected members of the club. Air. Young made reference to the increased cost of printing and advertising. On his motion it was agreed that tenders be called for the printing of the race books. Discussion arose over the loss being made over the renting of the club’s loose-boxes in Alangapiko Street, due to increased rating. The premises are for sale, and no action was taken. Mr. T. G. Martin raised the question whether trotters in training on the course could be given fast work the reverse way round just before a meeting, and he thought trainers should have the option, provided application wus made to the caretaker, lhe question was referred to the course committee for favourable consideration. Mr. Tims urged that the course be banked and top-dressed near and between the three and four-furlong posts. JTe hoped the committee would set aside at least £IOO for this work and have it put in hand after the coming race meeting. Doubt was expressed by a builder ; us v -> whether the number-board could be shifted, as suggested at last committee meeting, owing to the concrete b.Mso not being reinforced. As it was realised the work could not be done bet ore next race meeting the matter was deferred. Air A. s. Wallace (vice-president) presided, and there were also present- . Messrs. .T. P. O’Sullivan, T G Mtrtin. A Bond. H. Weal, j. T . Young) ts. A. Empson, Ar. it. Tims, p Quin and J. G. Wynyard (secretary).
