TE KUITI CLUB

ANNUAL RACE MEETING ENTRIES DUE ON FRIDAY j One of the most popular of the I week-end fixtures on the country eir- ; | cuit is that of the Te Kuiti Racing i ; Club, which this season is set down ! I for Saturday and Monday. November !23 and 25. The daylight Limited will j prove a boon to Auckland city patrons, j for this train enables them to get I away a few minutes before S a.m. on j race days, arrive at Te Kuiti in plenty j of time for the first race, leave again i about 7 p.m., and get lyack to Auck- ; land about 31 p.m. In addition, of i course, there will be the usual special j trains from the various parts of the ! province, excursion fares being available on these specials. A nice programme lias been drawn up by the executive of the Te Kuiti Club, who are making a bold bid for the patronage of horse owners and trainers. There are two handsome £ 50 gold cups to be won, these being for the Te Kuiti Cup, the open mile and a-quarter race, and for the Maniapoto Hack Cup, nine furlongs. There should be very vkeen competition for these splendid trophies. J These events, however, are only two [ on a schedule that makes a pronounced i appeal to owners and trainers. Nominations for all events close on I Friday next. November 1, with Messrs. ! Biomfield and Company, Auckland, at 5 p.m., and with the secretary, Mr. A. | AV. LEFT LAMENTING BOOKMAKER GOES HOME Backing a winner and not being able | to collect the money is an experience J that a racegoer does not desire. More than one patron of the Menangle Park (N.S.W.) meeting recently, however, were left lamenting after Traymobile had won the Three-years-old Handicap. Not only were they unable to collect their winnings, but their stake money also was missing, as the bookmaker was not at his post. Later his bag, book and tickets were found in a building near the public stand. The bookmaker, who held a Leger licence for unregistered fixtures, did not have official sanction to operate, nor had lie paid his fee for the day. j Evidently he took the opportunity of I betting during the temporary absence of • the Menangle Club racecourse I detective, who also occupies ‘a similar position with the Australian Jockey Club. Ticket Handed In Several wagers were accepted about Traymobile, and one of the victimised persons was a woman who resides in North Sydney, and who had £2O to collect over Traymobile’s success. Another backer has handed in a ticket for £ 5 to tile club secretary. The club, not having licensed the bookmaker to operate, has not a jurisdiction in the matter beyond the power to summons him for using tickets that did not conform with the Government regulations. This would probably mean a small fine. A more serious charge could be made by the backers of the winner. There were more than 40 bookmakers at the Menangle Park meeting, and several others were refused permission !to bet. For sonic time officials of the i j club have contemplated making a rule 1 that only bookmakers holding certain licences be permitted to “stand-up” at Menangle, and the recent experiences will probably hasten matters. The club officials consider that, although it would mean fewer men operating, it would he more satisfactory to have only the well-established bookmakers, more especially as the wagering at Menangle is frequently heavy for a provincial meeting.
