BOGUS CHEQUES
SENTENCE INCREASED BY THREE MONTHS EXPLOITS IN AUCKLAND Brought down to the Police Court this morning from Mount Eden Gaol, where he is serving a sentence of three months’ imprisonment for passing valueless cheques in Wellington, John McArthur was sentenced to a further three months’ imprisonment for similar offences committed in Auckland. McArthur, a seaman, aged 35, pleaded guilty to two charges of obi taining goods and money by valueless | cheques on September 6 and 11. AcI cused was stated on the charge sheet to have obtained goods valued at £1 and £1 in money from Barron Cohen I by means of a valueless cheque, purj porting to be signed by J. Nelson. Fruit valued at 9s 4d and 10s Sd in money was also stated to have been I obtained from Nahna Saia, the valueless cheque used in that instance being signed with the name of John Blake McArthur also admitted the theft of a cheque book valued at Ss 4d from William Dyson, on September 6. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Hie cheque book had been stolen from Dyson, who had left it on the barge, of Which he was owner. The man had issued two bogus cheques in Auckland before going to Wellington to continue his exploits. “He is at present serv- \ in S a sentence of three months for the j Wellington offences,” said the chiefdetective. "He was sentenced to three ■ months’ concurrent on each of two charges. McArthur is a seaman who has not been long in New- Zealand He was sentenced on October 24 and has one previous conviction.
McArthur was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Mr. K. Hunt S.M., remarking that the term would take effect at the expiration of accused* present sentence.
