£5,000 SAVING MADE
REORGANISED REFUSE DISPOSAL DESTRUCTOR IMPROVED 1 New' methods in refuse collection ; and disposal are expected by Mr. J. Tyler, acting-city engineer, to mean an annual saving of £3.000. The improvements are largely due to the des-tructor-supervisee Mr. J. Whelan. Mr. Tyler reported his opinion to the City Council, through the Works ComI mittee, last evening in a statement on j his investigation and reorganisation of ! tho methods at the Freeman’s Bay i destructor. “The new methods have I been in operation five weeks and the | results achieved are sufficient for me J to assure the committee of an annual i saving of about £ 5.000,” he said. ! When the destructor was recently closed for a week's boiler inspection, both combustion chambers were altered to obtain full benefit of combustion. Furnaces were repaired and one generator chamber was practically l rebuilt. After restarting the plant, it was j found an adjustment could be made with tho staff, the burning could be effected with 60 per cent, less coal than previously, and a greater quantity of I refuse could be handled. | Seventeen per cent, more refuse is being dealt with, the total burning costs are 34 per cent, less, and Mr. j Tyler believes that the destructor is ! capable of dealing with even 30 per i cent, more refuse than is now’ being I burnt. Storage accommodation for collected refuse and other questions were being considered, Mr. Tyler added.
