“THE JAZZ SINGER” Comedy and pathos have been deftly blended in “The Jazz Singer,” the alltalkie now commencing its second successful week at the Strand Theatre. A 1 Jolson, who made a .rapid rise to fame in the moving picture world in “The Singing Fool,” plays the principal role, and lie is supported by May McAvov, Warner Oland, Eugenie Besserer, Otto Lederer, Bobbie Gordon, and other celebrated artists. Directed by Alan Crosland, the picture is based on the play by Samson Raphaelson, and includes several fine singing numbers for Jolson. The story deals with the life- of a young singer who suddenly achieves fame, but is nevertheless torn between love for his career and duty to his parents. The supporting talkies include songs by" Reinwald Werenath. the eminent baritone, who sings “The Road to Mandalay,” a humorous sketch entitled “The Reformer,” by Joe Browning, American comedian: an Eve’s Review: and a new edition of the Fox Movietone News, with events of the day in sight and sound.
