“NASTY OLD PEOPLE”

NEIGHBOURS COMPLAIN ABOUT OLD COUPLE both fined 1 ou are a nasty pair of cantankerous old people,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, fining John William Dean and his wife £ 5 and costs each on charges of using abusive and* insulting language. Mr. Baeyertz pleaded not guilty for ’both defendants. The complaint was made by neighbours of defendants who gave evidence to show that they had suffered for some time from the attentions of the Deans. Their evidence was supported to some extent by that of Constable McGlone of Kingsland. The defence was that it was the Deans who were persecuted by their neighbours who had banded together to come to court and give evidence against them. Imposing the fine, the magistrate said that a second appearance would mean a month in gaol. “You are too old to behave like that,” he said to defendants.
