Taupiri Club Holds Annual Ball VANCOUVER CUP PRESENTED The Taupiri Rugby Football Club held its annual dance recently in the Taupiri Hall, which had been gaily decorated for the occasion with streamers of black and gold, the club’s colours. Excellent music was provided by Hildreth’s orchestra, of Hamilton. Among those present were:—Mr. and Mrs, Bilkey, Mr. and Mrs. George Powell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Murphy, Mr. and M,rs. Les. Powell, Mr. and Mrs. McKercher, Mr, and Mrs. Moore, Mr. and Mrs. Dibble, M,r. and Mrs. W. Powell (Hamilton), Mr. and Mrs. T. Main (Auckland), Mr. and Mrs. E. Powell. Mr. and Mrs. W. Waring, Mr. and Mrs. W. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. M. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. G. Powell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Wilson, Mrs. F. Wilson, Mrs. F. Day, Mrs. Gerrand, Mrs. R. T. Hill, Mrs. Charles, Mr. and Mrs. Vollemaere, Mrs. Davies, Mr. Tapper. During the evening the Vancouver Cup was presented to the Taupiri Club. The presentation was made by Mr. F. Harris, of Huntly, who was introduced by Mr. S. V. Bilkey, the president of the Taupiri Club. Mr. Harris briefly outlined the historv of the Vancouver Cup. When the 1924 AH Blacks were returning from England across Canada, they played a match at Vancouver. The Mayor of Vancouver, on behalf of the citizens of that town, presented the team with this cup, now known as the Vancouver Cup. On returning to New Zealand, the All Blacks handed over the cup to the New Zealand Rugby Union. Largely due to the efforts of Mr. Harry Frost, of Auckland, the cup was procured as a trophy to be played for by the clubs of the Taupiri SubUnion. HANDSOME CUP The cup stands about 2ft in height, and its value may be judged from the fact that it is insured for £75. In- receiving the cup from Mr. Harris, the captain of the club, Mr. T. Cronin expressed the determination of the Taupiri Club to guard the trophy they had won. Taupiri will bo tlio first club to have its name on the cup.

Air. Bilkey then presented a gold medal, suitably inscribed, to every member of the club who had played in three competition matches for the Vancouver Cup. The names of the recipients are as follow:—T. Cronin, J. Litt, S. Litt, J. White, W. White! R. Aliller, D. Smith, F. Wilson A. Button, T. Afoxam, J. Bishop, J. Geake, W. Lovel, B. AfcGovven, A. Wright, C. Davies, AI. Davies, R. Dibble. Aledals were also presented to T. Eagleson, the most improved junior and to W. Beverland. the most improved schoolboy during the 1929 season. In presenting these medals, Air. Bilkey took the opportunity of thank- - mg the sister clubs of the sub-union ! lor the help given to make the 1929 Rugby football season such a success. , this came a presentation to Mr. Bilkey, who is leaving for Kerikeri, in tho Bay of Islands district. Air. Bilkey has been in Taupiri, farming, for some years, and has always taken a keen interest in the sports of the township. Air. W Waring, on behalf of the footballers’ presented ALr. Bilkey with an enlarged photograph of the victorious Taupiri team as a fitting memento of his having been a president of that club when it was the first winner of the Y ancouver Cup. To Airs. Bilkev was given a handsome hairbrush and comb set. Mr. Les. Powell then presented Air. Bilkey with a travelling rug. this being given on behalf of the Taupiri Bports Club. Air. Bilkey suitably replied to the speeches of the men, who thus bade farewell on behalf of the people of Taupiri to Air. and Airs. Bilkey.
