HUGE CRANE COLLAPSES

BREAKS UNDER STRAIN OF LOAD WORKMEN ESCAPE UNHURT From Our Own Correspondent DUNEDIN, Today. Workmen on the site of the new Dunedin post office had a narrow escape yesterday, when a large crane and pile-driving plant suddenly collapsed and crashed to the ground with a roar. The crane, which is operated by steam, was lifting a wooden staging weighing between four and five tons when the main stem timber, having a cross-section of 12 inches each way, snapped at its base, allowing the upper works and the load to topple sideways on to a stack of piles. The whole plant was badly damaged, so that it will be some days before it is in working order again.
