VALUELESS CHEQUES
MAN SENT FOR SENTENCE BIGAMY CHARGE TO ANSWER From Our Own Correspondent ROTORUA, Tuesday. Yesterday before Messrs. W. L. Richards and T. Sloane, J.P’s, Charles Mozart Sp'inley, alias John Watson, was charged with obtaining from Hannah Patterson the sum of £5 by means of a valueless cheque. Hannah Patterson, boarding-house keeper at Ngongotaha, said that accused came to her house on October 21 and made arrangements for the boarding of two others who did not appear. At the end of the week he left for Okoroire giving witness a cheque for £5, and she gave £ 3 in change. The cheque was returned “no account.” Constable Brown, said he obtained a statement in which accused admitted the offence also another at Cambridge where he issued a valueless cheque for £lO and received £7 in change. Accused pleaded guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused was further charged that on January 17, 1925, at Hamilton, being married he went through a form of marriage with Annie Mary Phelan and falsely stated to the registrar that he was a bachelor. Accused was remanded to appear at Hamilton on Thursday to answer this charge.
