TALKIE MONOPOLY?
QUESTION ASKED IN HOUSE DEPARTMENT KEEPS TOUCH TUB SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Monday. Is there a monopoly of the talkie apparatus in New Zealand? In the House this evening Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central) asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, if his attention had been drawn to the methods of certain foreign film distributors in connection with the supplying of theatres which had installed New Zealandmade talkie apparatus. He asked for an inquiry into the conditions they insisted on before supplying films. Mr. Fraser said that it was reported in some cases that preference was given to those theatres which had installed foreign machines.
The Minister assured the House that the department was in close touch with the question, and was aware of the position. Some unsatisfactory conditions did exist, and the question was being investigated. The department would try to ensure equal justice for all concerned, and would see to it that no monopoly was created. The department would welcome and act on any evidence of unfairness brought under its notice.
