OBSCURED BY DUST
LORRY CRASHES INTO MOTOR GRADER DRIVERS’ NARROW ESCAPE From Our Own Correspondent OPOTOKI, Monday. A most unusual road accident occurred at Opotiki today. Shortly after noon the county grader was working just outside the borough, over the Waioeka Bridge, and as a result the road was very dusty. A motor-lorry owned by Mr. A. Mortensen and driven by an employee, Mr. E. Wells had just travelled over the bridge when It was passed by a motorcar travelling at high speed. The dust-cloud from the grader completely obscured the view of Mr. Wells, ’who drove straight Into the rear o£ the motor grader which was driven by Mr. W. Anderson. The lorry struck the grader a heavy blow, the front portion being practically wrecked. Mr. Wells had a remarkable escape from serious injury, being thrown up above the steering-wheel and receiving bruises and scratches. The driver of the grader escaped uninjured. So tightly were the two machines tangled together that It took about an hour to separate them.
