VANDALISM IN PARKS

ONEHUNGA COMMUNICATES WITH POLICE YOUNG PLANTS UPROOTED Vandalism in Jellicoe Park was mentioned at the meeting last evening of the Onehunga Borough Council. Cr. A. C. Tonkin, chairman of the Reserves Committee, said scores of young plants had been uprooted and seats in the park overturned a few nights ago. He urged that the council should notify the police. Similar action in the Te Papapa garden rockery reserve was reported by Cr. Geraghty. Huge rocks had been rolled on to the footpaths, he said. Those responsible, residents of an adjoining district, had, when threatened with legal proceedings, undertaken to repair the damage. The town clerk was instructed to communicate with the police in connection with the damage in Jellicoe Park. The larrikinism in the park has been responsible for the endowment of power as special constables in two of the council’s gardeners. They will have special caps and badges. Resolutions were made by the council thanking those who had assisted in the provision of the War Memorial Arch and its successful opening on Sunday. The Mayor mentioned last evening that, now the arch was completed, the council’s attention would be centred on establishing a swimming bath on the beach below Norman’s Hill.
