“HOME AWAY FROM HOME” IN EAST END COLLEGE FOR PUBLICANS LONDON, October 15. The Rev. Basil Jeliicoe, a cousin of Lord Jeliicoe, former GovernorGeneral of New Zealand, who is the head of an East End mission, is Uuildiiig a "parish pub,” named "The Anchor,” where he will live, besides encouraging the patronage of East End residents.
He says the majority of public houses in Somers Town are “beastly, little, stinking dens.” Mr. Jellicoe’s aim is to provide good meals in clean, homely surroundings, besides drink. He will also permit parishioners to bring In their friends for a chat, as they cannot entertain them in their overcrowded houses.
“AV'e ought to make the publican's profession great, noble and honourable," says Mr. Jeliicoe. “I advocate the establishment of a publicans’ college, where men could be trained as social workers and, subsequently, as first-class publicans.”
