MUNICIPAL CONCERT

POPULAR PROGRAMME BY BAND A pleasing and well-attended entertainment was given by the Municipal ! Band under the direction of Mr. Chrisj topher Smith at the Town Hall on Sat- ! urday evening. Included in the programme were a number of the items * recently selected by popular vote for | the last concert and which could not ! be found room for on that occasion. I The programme was warmly received. I The old favourites, ‘The Bohemian i Girl” and “Maritana.” were represented on the programme by comprehensive selections. Both were soundly played and the solo work was of a high standard. The outstanding number, however, was Schubert’s ‘‘Unfinished” (No. VIII.). The treatment which this classic received undoubtedly puts the Municipal Band on a very high plane. The band’s leading clarinet player made his initial appearance as a soloist at these concerts. His playing of Weber’s “Concertino” stamped him as an accomplished artist and his recall number, “The Ploughman’s Song,” by Schumann, was equally as pleasing. Mr. Smith’s own number, “Beethoven Echoes,” was also very pleasing. The vocalists were Mrs. Hal McLennan and Mr. Wilfred Scott. Both I were warmly applauded and had to i obligo with extra, numbers. Miss [ Thelma Gordon was the accompanist.
