Sir Author Scores at New Brighton
GOOD TROTTING MIX UP IN SADDLE HEAT (Special to THE SUS) CHRISTCHUKCII, Saturdav. Sir Author, a great horse but a very unsound one. was well suited by the grass track at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s second spring meeting today, and after taking the van outside the distance lasted long enough in a spirited finish with Jean McElwyn, the back-marker, to earn the verdict by a long neck. The track was in good order and the splendid racing, with close finishes, reflected credit on the work of liandicapper F. C. Thomas. The attendance was fair, weather tine and speculation brisk, tho sum of £26,601 being put t’lirough the machine, against £25,786 for the one-day meeting in September last year. Details of the racing are appended; One for D. Withers Scuttle £251, Nancy McKinney £239 and Great Burton £I2S were the best backed in the Innovation Handicap. It was not a good race. for King’s Voyage went out smartly at the start and was not fully extended to beat Great Dillon by three lengths, with Nancy McKinney a similar distance away. Both second and third horses broke in the last half-mile, but Great Dillon showed most speed and should turn out a good performer. King's Voyage trotted a fine race. He is a five-year-old by Happy Voyage--Queen Cole, and was driven by D. Withers. Jacky Logan Goes Fast Cushla D'Or £696 and Jacky Logan £642 were favourites for the Shirley Handicap. Jacky Logan was well placed throughout, and although challenged by Cushla D’Or in the last furlong, he won well by three lengths, with Otaio Rose, who led for a mile and three furlongs, five lengths further back. Llewellyn broke in the back when making a fast run, and was a close fourth. Jacky Logan won at the last meeting of the Aushburton County Racing Club, and the way he won today would suggest mßre successes. From a 3.39 mark he went 3.2 S 1-5. A Fine Contest June De Oro £927, the Sunshower— Jean McElwyn bracket £598, and Sir Author £SS4, carried most support in the Waimairi Handicap. It was a great race, and when the straight was reached. Sir Author. June De Oro. Billy Sea and Sunshower came all in line. Then Jean McElwyn showed up on the outside, but Sir Author stuck gamely to his task and reached the line a neck ahead of Jean McElwyn, with Billy Sea half a length away, closely
followed by Sunshower, Granite City and Fair Wave. Sir Author, who greatly resembles his sire. Author Dillon, won on his merits, and providing he remains sound should develop into a high-grade pacer. He was noticeably sore on returning to the bird-cage today. Jean McElwyn stayed like a good one. Her stable mate, Sunshower, ran a sterling race, which should do her the world of good. Billy Sea’s performance was also a fine one, making his Coast prospects appear fairly bright. Arikitoa in Good Style Eugene De Oro £775, Logan Princess £527, and the Patsy Pliegan— Shadowland bracket carried the confidence of backers -in the Spring Handicap. Arikitoa showed fine form at Methyen, and that run did him a lot of good, judging by the convincing manner in which he won from Eugene D© Oro and Patsy Pliegan. Arikitoa was giving away 24yds, but he started so well that he was tucked in behind the leaders, Venarc and Patsy Phegan, passing tho stand. It looked as though Eugene Do Oro would beat Arikitoa at the three furlongs, but when the pair came together near the wire Arikitoa left his opponent, to score comfortably. Patsy Phegan had every chance, but was not good enough on the day. Of the others most improvement can be expected from Haydock. Favourites Beaten
New Metford £667, Writer £391 and Repute £327 were most favoured of the Avon Handicap field. Nelson Ata, who carried £197, has always been known as a brilliant trotter, but in the staving department he had previously been disappointing. Today he outshone a good field in all respects and won away from New Metford and \V riter, both of whom broke and galloped past the post. The performance of Writer, now a member of C. S. Donald’s team, was very encouraging and his vast improvement at the trotting gait was most impressive. Little Johnnie, who broke more than once, showed a lot of speed when at his gait, but he is not a good one. Midland and Dolores did best of the beaten lot. and perhaps Midland will win shortly. Pearl Logan in Form Lough Neagh £9BO and the Pearl Logan-Dilnon bracket £BO9 were the only two heavily supported for the Brighton Handicap, and C. S. Donald completed the double when he steered home Pearl Logan a head in front of Lough Neagh. Pearl Logan was light in condition after her trip to the Waikato, but she won like a high-grade mare and has proved one out of th° bag since signing on with Donald. Dough Iseagh commenced smartly for a change, and he was natrowlv beaten by a particularly good one. Hector’s Own had no trouble in beating a tired for third place, her followers being Melodv' attle ’ Curfew Boy and Alpine Billy Sea Rolls Home Invader (£932) was elected a verv hot lavourite for the Beach Handicap, but he soon put his backers out of suspense by staying on the mark. The trotter Tamerlane went out to pilot the field along at a brisk bat. He led well up to the straight until his condition failed, and then Billy Sea went after Exclusive, and this pair, who were bracketed, beat Apex home, to land a big dividend for their supporters. Muriel de Oro and Jolly Chimes were both close up. Billy Sea might have been rejuvenated with monkey glands judging by his brilliant fimshing turn, and it is evident that , . Prlc '' has found the lost kev to the Australian-bred gelding.
Sunfish Escapes Trouble There was a bad mix-up in the Farewell Handicap after two furlongs and C r°\ e , red ' ? ed Audubon falling and Xlap, Culiensville, Hector’s Own
and Shadowland all coming down over him. A. Holmes, rider of Red Audubon, was the only horseman to sustain serious injury, having a wrist broken It was a miracle that no one was killed. Some of those inchided in the mishap were well fancied, and the raeo lost a lot of its interest. Sunfish went past Horotano with two furlongs to go, and won comfortably from Alvira and Sylvie Logan, with Horotano and "White Sun next. Sunfish has not been in long after a spell. The misfortune of one or two others was his gain today, but he is a pretty fair saddle horse. Innovation Handicap, of £125; unhoppled trotters: 12. miles; 3.5 U limit.- 7 King’s Voyage (B.
