High Syce Wins the Caulfield Cup

GREAT PERFORMANCE DOMINION FAILURES (United r.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sunday. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s spring meeting was concluded at Caulfield yesterday, when the attendance was approximately estimated at 65,000, a number of New Zealanders being present. No New Zealand hors.es got into the money. Gudroon, who failed badly on Wednesday, won the Oby Hurdles yesterday in comfortable style. First Legion followed up his victory in the Mona Nursery Handicap, run last Wednesday, by disposing of the opposition in the Gwyn Nursery Handicap. When a yearling, First Legion was bought for 300 guineas, and has won twice oht of three starts. Na-mera, the hero of many crosscountry contests, was last early in the Wyuna Steeplechase, but finished well, and won by a head in the last stride.

There was tremendous interest in tho Caulfield Cup. High Syce, who was never farther back than seventh, took third place at tho turn, and won brilliantly. Amounis came home fast, but was no match for the winner. Prince Viol had every chance, and the same applies to Taisho. High Syce is owned by Mrs. L. R. Buxton, the first woman to furnish the winner of the race since 1894. The trainer, J. Holt, and the jockey, W. Duncan, won last year with Maple. This is High Syce’s third successive win this season. The winner comes from Queensland, and is the first horse from that part of the Commonwealth to win the race since Ben Bolt scored in 1886. It was a popular victory, and much enthusiasm prevailed when High Syce came back to the enclosure. In the decision of the Burwood Handicap, Galenist was fourth early in the race, but finished best, and won brilliantly.

Brockwood. who was always prominent in the Windsor Handicap, scored a comfortable win. Gilt Edge, who ruled a. hot favourite, had every chance, but he failed to get closer than fifth.
