BRAVE BRITISH AIRMAN
RESCUES CADET FROM BLAZING PLANE SAVED FROM CERTAIN DEATH (United -P..A. —By Telegraph—Copyright) Reed. 11.23 a.in. LONDON, Friday. The “London Gazette” announces that the medal of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire has been awarded to FlightCadet McKechnie for gallantry. On June 20 an airplane piloted by Flight-Cadet Giles crashed at the Cranwell airdrome, and burst into flames. Giles was stunned, but he managed to release the safety-belt and fell out of the machine, dazed. McKechnie, landing iu another airplane 200 yards away, ran at full speed. The petrol of Giles’s plane was then in full blaze over an area of 10 yards. Giles was in the midst of the flames, semi-conscious. McKechnie, without hesitation, ran into the flames and pulled Giles out. Giles was badly burned. McKechnie, who was scorched, extinguished the flames of Giles’s clothing. Meanwhile the machine was in full blaze, the petrol spreading. It is certain that Giles would have been burned to death, as he was incapable of moving. The machine ultimately was completely destroyed.
