NEW GOVERNMENT ANXIETY IN LONDON Australian and .V.Z. Press Association Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Friday. A feeling prevails among the officials of the migration and several other departments at Australia House that the economy axe may fall soon. The anxiety due to the decline in the migration of last year is intensified by the change of Government. It is feared that the new Ministry in Australia may decide greatly, to reduce the staff and go slow on the migration policy. There is much curiosity and some uneasiness about the Government’s attitude toward publicity; but it is believed that nothing is likely to be done until the Minister comes to England.

BANKERS’ SUSPICIONS BASED ON WRONG IDEA Australian and N.Z. Press Association NEW YORK, Friday. Referring .today to the Australian election, the Hon. W. L. Balllieu, of Melbourne, former Leader of the Victorian Legislative Council, said:—“lt has been suggested to me here that bankers will fear that industry will be disturbed. The suspicion arises from a wrong idea. “Two things are certain. The Labour Party will put a lot of drive into the development of the country and the secondary industries, and will seek a safe line of finance. The City of London has accepted Mr. MacDonald’s Government with complete equanimity, and I feel sure the cities of New York and London can, with equal confidence, accept a Labour Administration in Australia.”

BRUCE DEFEATED BY 327 VOTES HUGHES SUPPORTS LABOUR SYDNEY, Friday. The final figures from the Prime Minister’s electorate, Flinders, are: E. J. Holloway (Labour) .. 31,379 S. M. Bruce ((Nationalist) 31,052 Majority for Labour .. 327 Ninety-five per cent, of the voters went to the poll. At the declaration of the North Sydney poll today, Mr. W. M. Hughes, who defeated Dr. L. W. Nott by over 12,000 votes, said: “This contest will remain uppermost in my mind. 1 stand as one who always thought of Australia and its ideals, and while the Labour Party stands for these principles it will Have my support.” A message has arrived from Western Australia saying that the official Nationalist candidate, Mr. W. M. Nairn, has won the Perth seat, which was held by Mr. E. A. Mann, Independent Nationalist, who recently voted against the Government. PREMI EiRS TO CONFER All the State Premiers, except those of South Australia and Western Australia, have already agreed to attend a conference at Melbourne about a fortnight hence, to discuss arbitration matters, as between the Federal and State jurisdictions.
