BOYS ON FARMS
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHEME FEW COMING FORWARD “We cannot get boys for the land.” This is the true position according to Dr. E. P. Neale, secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. He stated this morning that the names of between 40 and 50 farmers were on the chamber’s books making application for boys to go on to their farms. Some of the names have been there for two months. So few boys were coming forward that it was impossible to fulfil the demands. “There is no prospect of filling all the vacancies until the end of the school year,” continued Dr. Neale. “The few boys who are coming forward choose the farms which are near the city and the farmers in distant parts of the province are left lamenting.”
Some time ago the Chamber of Commerce embarked on a scheme to place boys on the land. The scheme has been a success as far as placing the boys is concerned but there are not sufficient lads coming forward to meet the demand.
