Recently the Hamilton Borough Council approached the Christchurch City Council asking if it was prepared to accept an offer for the old clock tower which stood at the corner of Manchester Street.
Advice has been received by the local council that the clock tower is not for sale, as it had been decided to reerect- it on another site.
Pleasure at the efficiency attained by the local ambulance and nursing divisions of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was expressed by Mr. C. J. Tunks, district commissioner, who inspected the corps on Wednesday evening with the senior district superintendent, Mr. F. J. Hutchinson, and the district officer, Mr. A. W. Probert. An official welcome to the visitors was accorded by the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, after which an enjoyable demonstration was given.
Advice that the Minister of Education had approved a £ for £ subsidy up to £2OO for the Whitiora school baths was received by the school committee yesterday. The committee has collected £ 350, and has accepted a tender for the construction of baths, which will be started immediately.
. “It’s none of our business—it’s a family quarrel.” said Cr. C. J. W. Barton, the veteran member of the Hamilton Borough Council, on Wednesday, referring to the conference with Mr. Sterling concerning the proposed change of name of Frankton Junction, at which the council was represented. The Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, objected to the term “family quarrel,” and claimed that, as the bulk of . the Frankton ratepayers desired a change, it was the duty of the council to support them.
