DASTARDLY CRIME

VITRIOL FLUNG IN FACE OF PRETTY WOMAN SHOCKINGLY DISFIGURED Australian and N.Z. Press Association (United Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. PARIS, Wednesday. The Assize Court, sitting at Albi. is hearing an extraordinary case of vitriol-throwing, involving persons of wealth and standing. It is alleged that an attack was deliberately planned to get rid of the victim. She was Madame Rolland. a pretty woman. She survived terrible injuries to her face, but was shockingly disfigured, and lost an eye. A friend, Sylvain Gleizes, was driving her in his motor-car. They overtook a lorry on a deserted part of a road. The driver of the lorry asked for assistance and Madame Rolland and Gleizes got out. Suddenly the woman screamed in agony, as a quantity of the corrosive fluid had been dashed in her face. The lorry thereupon drove off. The police were suspicious when they learned that Gleizes had taken a long time to find a hospital. Finally, a -‘witness said she had heard Gleizes and Rolland’s former lover, known as “Aubes the Terror,” arranging to pay 700,000 francs to two rascals, to put her out of the way by throwing vitriol in her face. Both were concerned in murderous acts years ago.

The trial has created a tremendous sensation.
