THE AMATEURS The one-lap handicap event conducted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club last week-end took the form of an attack upon the record for this distance, which is held by W. Brat*. The record was lowered by one second. J. Wade, who, after this event, can lay claim to the record, was accompanied by three seasoned riders. When Bray put up his record in 1927, he was only partnered by F. Casey. This goes to show that the scratch men of this season are about oil a par with those of two years ago. J. Wade, in breaking the record, put
up a good performance. H i s time shows there was no loafing on the journey. When he settled down for his long final sprint he took his co - markers by surprise, for they did not expect to encounter th e Wade of old. Now that the track season is close at
hand, he should be seen at his best. The winner of the handicap was A. Mackrell (lmin. 50sec.), who gained his first victory in a road race. Starting off with ten other competitors, he put in a good final effort, which carried him over the line with a length in hand. A co-marker of Mackrell, L. Dwight, was second. Another one of the Dwight family, he certainly showed himself a worthy competitor. He will not lack the finer points of the game as his older brothers are all good pedallers. Still another lmin. 50seo. marker was placed. This was L. Hall, who gained third berth. Settling down from the start, he was only beaten over the concluding stages. D. Milne (scratch) was not seriously troubled to win the junior event. Hiding on his own he soon collared his nearest opponents, off 20sec., going on to score by four lengths.^ The race between the three star juniors, Lethaby, Hall and Francis, resulted in an easy victory for the former. First prize was a medal donated by Mr. C. A. Paul. The event was in the form of a time-trial. The winner’s time was the fastest yet returned by a junior this season. Next week’s race is a consolation event, to be decided over three laps of the Mangere circuit. All members who have not been placed first or gained fastest time are eligible to compete. Tho juniors will hold their one-lap race. SATURDAY’S HANDICAPS The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club will conclude its road racing season next Saturday with a 5 h miles junior and a 17 miles senior handicap. The senior race is a consolation event open
to all who have not registered a win or a fastest time during the present season. The junior race will commence at 2 p.m. Mr. G. W. Cleaver has declared the following handicaps for the two races: 51 Miles Junior Race.—G. M. Lethaby, E. Hall, scr: R. 1,. Francis, D. Milne, 255; C. O. Heart, L. Oxton, H. V. Gordon, S. THE CASH RIDERS For the first time this season the Auckland Cycle Club held a race in which no scratch riders participated. This made the fastest time honours very open, making members keener than usual. Conditions were ideal. A good field of IS riders competed. • On July 27 of this season L. Pinfold made his debut as a professional. Al-
though he had not won the thick end of the purse, he has been putting in some good rides, being unlucky to be just out of the money on more than one occasion. His win last Saturday was a popular one. The crowd present showed their appreciation of his performance by giving
him a welcome ovation when he crossed the finishing line three parts of a length to the good. Another ex-amateur was in second berth. This was C. Yule (3min. 20sec.). He put in some good laps when caught by the ultimate winner. His fine finishing effort was.worthy of an older rider. More should be heard of him. His record as a pro. is three starts for two seconds. T. Lowndes has a mortgage on the third placing. The race last week saw him place his seventh ride in this position. Altogether he has had ten “collects” this season, making his total for the Pardy Cup 14 points. A model of consistency., he will be very unlucky should he be beaten for this trophy. This is tlie second occasion on which K. Mathieson has gained time honours. Ken, who is recognised as the third sprinter in the club, put in a good dash at the finish to down the fastfinishing G. Hall. The event next week will be held on the Mangere course. This will be over 19.4 miles. With fine weather a good muster is anticipated. Now that riders are getting ready for the track season opportunity should be taken to participate in these final work-outs. SATURDAY’S RACE The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. G. Knight for the Auckland Cycle Club’s 19.4 miles road race, starting at the Mangere Bridge at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday: S. Hayes, J. Ifindop, J. Harcourt, F. Prior, scr; Iv. Mathieson, W. Francis, G.
