At the Newmarket meeting today the big handicap event resulted as follows: CESAREWITCH STAKES A sweepstake of £25 each, with £I,OOO added. Winners of races of nine furlongs and upward to carry a penalty; 2J miles. Closed with 133 entries, including 24 from France. WEST WICKLOW (D. O’M. Leahy), ch g, by Tangiers—Bachelor's Dream, syrs 1 FRIENDSHIP (J. B. Joel), b h, by Son-in-Law—Lady of Liege, 4yrs 2 BROWN JACK (Col. H. A. Wernher), br g, by Jackdaw—Querquidella, syrs 3 There was a big field of 35 runners. Won by a length, a similar distance separating second and third. The placed horses were trained by L. Todd, C. Peck and I. Anthony respectively. Last year’s race was worth £1,630, but it would be more valuable on this occasion. The French horses were badly beaten. Last year West Wicklow was fourth in the Cesarewitch and Brown Jack ninth. CHIEF RULER GELDING SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DERBY WINNER Full details of the race won by the New Zealand-bred gelding Hot Springs in Adelaide recently, which came to hand by yesterday’s mail, show that the victory was well obtained.
