VANDALS AT STATUE
YOUNG MEN WITH TAR AND FEATHERS EPSTEIN UNPERTURBED Australian and N.Z. Press Association LONDON, Tuesday. Anti-Epsteinites have turned their attention to the new statue at the underground station at Westminster. A policeman surprised four young men in plus-fours at two o’clock this morning. They dashed out of the station and escaped in a motor-car. The police discovered several jars containing tar, also feathers, and daylight revealed that parts of the statue had been tarred. Mr. Epstein, when informed of the outrage, said:—“People who do this sort of thing make a great mistake if they think it angers me. I am not even disgusted. An artist’s feeling is confined solely to his work. 1 have no sentiment one way or the other over acts of this kind. Michael Angelo’s “David” at Florence had bars around it to protect it from attack after the populace had stoned it, so I’m in good company.”
