Sir Lionel Cust was surveyor of the king’s pictures and works of art. and gentleman usher to the King. 1001-27. Horn in London on January 25. 1859, was educated at Eton and. He entered the ™ar Office in ISB2, was transferred 10 the British Museum as assistant ln the department of prints and drawings, 1884; director of the National Portrait Gallery, 1595-1909; joint editor and director of the Burlington Magazine.” 1909-19. He Published many works on art, also ® a, |y articles in the Dictionary of Rational Biography and elsewhere. Sir Lionel was the only son of the J®* e Sir Reginald Cust and Lady Elisabeth Bligh, eldest daughter of tlle sth Earl of Darnley. He was parried in 1895 to Sybil, daughter of the 4th Baron Lyttelton.
