RUGBY AND SOCCER
SUCCESSFULLY COMBINED BY DEVONPORT SCHOOL PAST SEASON’S RECORD In the opinion of many, both Soccer and Rugby cannot be played success- ! fully by teams from one school, but j Devon port has proved, during the season just closed, that the two codes j can be played with success in a primj ary schools. I In the schools’ senior Soccer compei tition, the Devonport team went ! through without a loss. It won the Yici toria Park group after some strenuous ! games, and then went on to defeat the | winners of the Domain group by a ! margin of three goals to one, thus win- ; ning tho championship of Auckland. The play right through was of a. (very high standard, and two boys ! gained representative honours, both ! j playing with distinction in the team i which visited Wellington. This augurs j well for the future of Shore Soccer, i In the Rugby code, the school teams i performed with credit. In the local | competition for the Napier Bronze, j the seniors tied for first place, but were defeated in the play-off. The juniors were more successful, however, going right through without defeat. After winning the North Shore section, they played off with the winners of the three city groups, defeating Alount Eden and Richmond Road and drawing with Papatoetoe. The last-mentioned result necessitated a play-off with Papatoetoe, and in a strenuous and exciting contest Devonport notched a win by six points to nil. This is the first occasion on which Devonport has Avon the junior competition, which carries with it the handsome Rupert Moore Memorial Shield.
