SCHOOL OPENING TIMES
DAYLIGHT-SAVING EFFECT
OBSERVANCE DESIRED Last year’s problem of country school opening hours differing from the time fixed under the Daylight Saving regulation was again raised before the Auckland Education Board this morning. A general resolution was made by the board stating that it desired adherence to Summer Time hours, but it. would be prepared to consider special claims of inconvenience brought about by the legislation. The schools concerned with applications for different classes were Ruawai and Waiotira. When Mr. H. S. W. King asked if the board had not consented last year to local option, Mr. F. A. Snell gave it as his view that, owing to Daylight Saving having become possibly a permanent measure, all sections of the community should adapt themselves to it. Mr. King said that country operations could possibly affect school hours. “The information circulated by the board last year was that it wanted a fair trial for Summer Time.’’ said Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the board. Mr. E. £. Banks: It is fair to allow local committees to make arrangements in accordance with local conditions. Mr. King: I do not see why each case should not be considered on its merits.
It was Mr. King’s motion for the board to say it desired observance of the regulations, but it would consider special circumstances.
