Grey Stays in Gaol for Another Week
NO BAIL ALLOWED FURTHER REMAND GRANTED A further refusal to grant bail to John Grey of Helensvilie, charged under the name of A. B. Crouch, as being wanted in Texas, U.S.A. for a 13 years old forgery charge involving 200,000 dollars, was made at the Police Court this morning by Mr. F. K. Hunt S.M. Grey was arrested in Helensvilie three weeks ago following the arrival from Bell County, Texas, of Sherriff Bigham who had been sent out to New Zealand to identify A. B. Crouch. When Grey first appeared in the Police Court bail was refused him by the magistrate, Mr. Hunt. A week’s remand was made, and, when the man next stood in the dock, bail was granted in sureties totalling £6,000. Last week the magistrate cancelled the bail remarking that he was not prepared to take the responsibility of letting accused out again. This morning a further week’s remand was asked for by Mr. Hubble for the Crown. “In regard to bail," ventured Mr. Terry who appeared for accused. “Are you of the same opinion as last week that it is a question for the Supreme Court?"
