TROTTING
By ABaTDOS NORTHLAND TROTS GOOD SPORT ON SATURDAY No country trotting organisation in the Dominion erjoys a larger [ measure of popularity with the j sporting public than the Northland I Club, which operates at Whangarei, j where it provides yearly some j splendid contests at Kensington j Park. Ever since the inception of the club, j those who have controlled the manage- i j-nmi of affairs generally nave sue-J ceed#d in making: good, and placing j the sport in the Northland territory on a sound footing. To achieve ultimate i buccess, hard work was necessary, but j neering spirit was in the blood t ,f the promoters and by energy, ability and enthusiasm the club was raised to a high pedestal among country sporting organisations, and the position it attains today in the public mind is richly deserved, and a tribute to the optimists of the club. The greatest tribute experienced was in securing a suitable date and each vear the club lias raced at a different period of the trotting season. Last vear a most successful function was held on Labour Lay, but owing to a counter-attraction at Epsom this season, the Whangarei sportsmen found it advisable to select another date, ultimately deciding to sandwich in between Waikato and Auckland.
That the day is favourable is shown by the acceptances received, and with good class engaged the racing promises to be decidedly interesting. “Abaydos” appends a preliminary survey of the fields, and the final review will appear in Friday’s issue. Dargaville Handicap
A number of young pacers arc given a good chance to gain racing experience In this event, while others, still competing as maidens, will have an opportunity to lose that status. Of the young team on the front, Mountain Princess, Idle Girl, Queen’s Bond, Man o’ Belle, Gumdigger and Kewpie’s Guy are all worthy of respect, and after her showing at Hamilton the latter may appeal most. In the older section, Margaret Wallace, Oliver Thorpe and Gold Seam claim attention. Moko Fly is on a handy mark, and if he is dressed in his best should be handy, while Ijord Lu has a good chance to score. Fancies may be Moko Fly, Kewpie’s Guy, Man o’ Belle and Mountain Princess. Whangarei Handicap This heat for square-gaiters of moderate calibre, produces a field of competitors which are more or less known to followers of the sport. Te Hono should have a show off the efid. while the appearance of T. McQuoid s A 1 Mack colt will be interesting. Te Ngutu will still have friends, and if she w dll Id go square should have a show. Paradigm must be respected over Sweet Memory, while Lady Eva, if ready to race, will keep them all busy. Most support will be found for Paradigm, Lady Eva and Te Ngutu. Northland Handicap On the front of the principal heat are several likely candidates, and it is likely the successful candidate will be found in this line. Our Nancy showed pleasing form and staying powers at Claudelands, while Explosion also went a good race. Nella Li lion will be troubed by the journey, and should do better in the sprint. Yen-Tome has to be taken on trust at the distance, but there is no reason why she should not stay. Lord Nepean and Uncle Bert should be held sale by Goldman, and backers will look for Our Nancy, Explosion and Goldman. Kawakawa Handicap The majority of those engaged in the opening heat will be seen out in this contest, while the addition of several better class competitors at the rear of the handicap will make it much more interesting. In addition to the novices mentioned in the Dargaville Handicap, Boland is a likely one to show improvement on last season, and will keep the others busy on the end. Moko Fly is well placed, and is a big possibility, while Pavlova may require a race or two before she is at her best- Xel de
Beau and Vanity Boy are sure to be troublesome from the back, and public i opinion will be divided between the ! two buck-markers and Moko Fly and j Pavlova. Waipu Handicap The milo harness go should bo full t*f interest, and Student Prince and Haroto are a useful pair off the front line. Benefice, Lady Barrington and . Nathaniel are all capable of showing a good turn of speed, and the latter v. .begins smartly. Vanity Boy may tackle - the earlier event, but Gold Cast must - hot be overlooked, and he will be a nuisance to the opposition. Bell Dial * Was not quite right at Hamilton, but may improve, and Hohoro in this field * should be able to go evenly all the #5* a V‘ okin S for favourites, Nathaniel. * Student Prince, Gold Cast and Hohoro ‘Will be chosen. President’s Handicap This is for the square-gaiters again. - iwid there are some promising con- . v testants. Off tho end Paradigm and Eady Eva will find most friends, and
further back Lirect Action will prove a nuisance. The distance may just be a bit beyond him in his present condition, but Peterson is in form and will be a tough nut to crack, and Anseline, despite her long handicap, will be going strong at the finish. It should be a good betting race, with Paradigm, Lirect Action and Peterson most in demand. Kaikohe Handicap The saddle heat is a popular one, and will not be devoid of interest from start to finish. Student Prince has won at this style, and Lord Lu is likely to go better with the weight on top, and Princess Betty can muster up some speed. Nathaniel and Nel de Beau have plenty of pace for such a journey, and will . make it willing all the way, while Benefice is also useful. Te Wahia may be the surprise of the field, while Gold Cast must be labelled dangerous. Nel de Beau, Benefice, Student Prince and Gold Cast will attract attention. Hikurangi Handicap There will be some speed in the final heat, and with Vanity Boy, Nel de Beau, Hohoro, Explosion and Bell Lial off the end, those at the back will have a big task to head some of the limit lot off. Nella Dillon can go a merry ten furlongs, and if not overtaxed in the big go, should cause a lot of worry to her rivals. Lord Nepean and Vendome are not set difficult tasks, and if the latter is to win a race soon this looks to be in her favour. Uncle Bert may give them a shock at the end, but public opinion will lean toward Nella Dillon, Nel de Beau, and Vendome.
