“EARLY BIRD
A Lean Week The Mas ter ton meeting on Saturday ; i next is the only fixture scheduled for ! this week. New Starter Mr. H. Connop. a well-known owner i ! and trainer. of Woodviile. has been I j appointed starter to the Pahiatua | j Racing Club. Auckland Cup ! Although entries closed last week ! j for the Auckland Cup. handicaps are i not due until December 4. weights for the sprint, the Railway Handicap, being announced simultaneously. Waikato Hunt Club Acceptances for all events at the Waikato Hunt Club’s fixture at Cambridge on Labour Day close next Monday at 5 p.m. with the secretary at Cambridge, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Company, Auckland. Te K,uiti's Annual The annual race meeting of the Te Kuiti Racing Club is to be held on Saturday and Monday, November 23 and 25. Entries for all events close on November 1. Recommissioned After a two-years’ absence. Odd Sox (Lucullus-Wee Rene) has made a reappearance on the training grounds, and is under G. Holland’s care at Ellerslie. It is probable that the Auckland jockey will supervise her preparation, for he intends to apply for a trainer’s licence. Formerly, Odd Sox raced in Mrs. E. A. Lindsay’s colours and was trained by S. G. Lindsay, but it is understood that the mare is now in different ownership. Having eaten the oats of idleness has left Odd Sox with a lot of surplus condition, and it is sure to be several months before she is in racing shape. Wellesley Stakes Prospects The "Wellesley Stakes, to be decided at Trentham on Saturday week, should see the first inter-Island clash of the season’s juveniles, and in addition Pomp, who ran a very creditable second in the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick, may be a contestant. Satisfy and Tray Bond, who finished first and third • in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui, are ■ engaged, and Simba represents the best ( public torn* of the North, to date. Unfortunately Chief Link was not entered. Pass On, Chrysology and Watch Officer are improvers, and Tenterden’s prospects may be gauged more accurately if he is produced at Masterton ; on Saturday. Public form, of course, points to Simba, Satisfy and Pomp disi puting the issue. Colts carry 5.7, geldings 5.4. and fillies 5.2 in this race, it being one of the few races in the DoI minion in which the gelding allowance ‘ pertains.
Racing at Te Rapa The spring meeting of the Waikato Racing Club is to be held at Te Rapa on Saturday and Monday, November 1G and 18. The principal events the first day are the Waikato Cup, of £650 (including £SO gold cup), one and a-quarter miles, and Cambridge Handicap, of £350, six furlongs. Masterton Next The Ellerslie light-weight horseman. W. Wiggins, has made the following engagements for the Masterton fixture ' next Saturday:—Tcheka, Balloon, Dainty Ways, Autopay, Veronese and General Gas. Among the Best The Ellerslie-trained three-year-old Bennie is among the entries for the mile and a-quarter weight-for-age event, the Harcourt Cup, at the forthcoming Trentham fixture. It appears a flattering nomination as the field includes such celebrities as Bright Glow, Commendation. Eaglet, Laughing Prince, Faganelli, Star Stranger and Silver Paper, to mention a few. German Horse to Retire' Germany's crack racehorse, the five-year-old Oleander, runs on Friday for the Grand Prix de Baden Baden, which he won last year, cabled a German correspondent on August. 26 to a London paper. The distance of the race is a mile and a-half. Following that lie will be prepared for the Prix de l’Arc de'Triomphe at Bois de Boulogne on October 6. Last season lie finished fifth to Kantar. lie then goes to England to compete in the Jockey Club Cup on October 31, and will be retired to the stud at the end of the season. Manawatu Summer Fixture The programme for the Christmas meeting on December 26, 27 and 28 of the Manawatu Racing Club has been published. The club is offering £6,400 over the three-day fixture. The principal event on the opening day is the Manawatu Cup, of £BOO. The 24tli Palmerston North Stakes will be decided on the second day of the meeting. The stake attached to the race is £ 500; the second and third horses taking £IOO and £SO respectively. The President’s Handicap, which comes up for decision on the second day, ha?s a stake of £SOO attached. Whereas the Cup race on the previous day will be contested over a mile and a-half, the President's Handicap will be over a mile and aquarter. Pomp Unlucky According to private reports received in New Zealand, Pomp was more than unlucky in the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick. He will add interest to the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham if produced in that event. New Sires Represented
The imported sires, Weather vane, Last Dart, and Rosenor, were represented for the first time in a race in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin. Rosenor received the best advertisement, as his well-grown son, Red Royal (from Monoxide) finished just behind the placed horses, after a slow start and meeting* trouble on the journey, lie is a good-looking youngster, who should pay his way before the season is much older. Cup Candidate Courageous is reported to be working well at Masterton, and there are indications that he is fancied as a New Zealand Cup candidate. lie does not appeal as a suitable horse for a light boy. Spoon’s Next Spoon, who acted as runner-up to Satisfy in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin again on Saturday, is a filly by Tea Tray-Warlove, hence a halfsister to Amor, who recently came under Aucklanders’ notice through his third in the Mitchelson Cup. Spoon was not nominated for the W.R.C. meeting at Trentham, and her next appearance will probably be on her home course? — Riccarton—next month. Missed Nominations It was intended to race Historic at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, but his nomination was missed through an oversight and he will not have another race until he lines up in the New Zealand Cup, unless he is sent to one of the small meetings, where lie would receive a crushing weight. He is well seasoned, so the lack of another race may not affect him. Phar Lap and Rosehill Guineas Hoodoo An interesting feature of Phar Lap’s A.J.C. Derby victory is that it broke a list of Rosehill Guineas winners who failed subsequently in the major classic, event at Randwick. As J. Pike could not do the weight at Rosehill, J. Munro ■was given the mount, and he pro-
nounced unhesitatingly that the Derby course -would not trouble Phar Lap. He proved a good prophet, and J. Pike had an arm-chair ride in the Derby. Recent Derby winners of note to fail at Rosehill were Artilleryman, Richmond Main, Rivoli, and Rampion. Heroic won the Guineas at Rosehill, and after a terrific struggle, which is still discussed in Australia, beat Nigger Minstrel and Spearfelt by narrow margins in the Derby. Good Stud Matron The Bezonian mare Satisfaction lias a very creditable record at the stud. The four oldest of her progeny are Receipt, Battle Colours, Full Flight and Satisfy, and they are all winners, the latest to appear being the two-year-old filly Satisfy, who captured the McLean Stakes on Thursdav. A yearling colt, a brother to Satisfy, is' also owned by the Riccarton trainer, D. Campbell, who has found the family very profitable. Silver Paper’s Programme Silver Paper won brilliantly at Wingatui on Thursday last. Me is not nearly at the top of his form yet, but at Wellington this month he will be seen to far greater advantage. Present intentions are to start him in the sixfurlong race on the opening day, and then give him a run in the Harcourt Cup. a race his trainer has been preparing him for. To date Silver Paper has not won beyond a mile. He finished very fast in fourth place in last year’s Derby, and the way he has trained on since suggests that 10 furlongs at least will.not be beyond him.
