MORRINSVILLE NOTES

Mr. Sprate, late of Waihou, has purchased Mr. T. Waleli’s farm, No. 8 Road, Te Puninga, and has taken up his residence. Mr. Walch and family have moved to Kihikihi. The death occurred suddenly at Hamilton Hospital of Ernest Holloway, aged 17, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Holloway, of Morrinsville. The dangerous practice of cyclists riding without holding on to the handle-bars was mentioned by Cr. W. Morrice, at the meeting of the Morrinsville Borough Council. The speaker said that if there was no by-law to stop the practice there should be one. The habit was very prevalent in Morrinsville, and should be stopped. The clerk said he understood there was provision to deal with the offence under the Police Offences Act. Mr. F. Lye, M.P., placed two questions to the Minister of Public Works on the order paper of the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The first was whether, with a view to providing unemployment relief, the Minister would favourably consider the immediate preparation of the site for tlie new railway station and yards at Morrinsville, and the second was whether, before any expenditure was made on the proposed Pokeno-Paeroa railway or the alternative TaupiriMorrinsville line, the Minister would have a full inquiry made to determine whether a concrete road would be of more economic value. Replies will be given to the questions on October 16. * * * The suggestion by Mr. W. Morrice that the Morrinsville Borough Council's representative on the Fire Brigade Committee confer with the superintendent on the advisability of instituting the ward system of alarm was adopted by the council on Friday evening. Mr. Morris said the system worked satisfactorily in other towns. The district was divided into four sections and a system of tojls on the fire alarm adopted. Thus one vigorous toll Mould denote the town ward or business area. Rv this means the public and the firemen Mould receive an indication of the location of the fire.
