TAKAPUNA HOME

BILL PROVIDES FOR CONTROL BUSINESS OF SYNOD The control of the Henry Brett i Memorial Home at Takapuna formed j the subject of a bill brought before j the Church of England Diocesan Synod ! last evening. | Archdeacon W. J. Simkin said that the* children would be? removed from 1 Richmond Road to Takapuna at about j the end of the year, and the new home would be governed by nine trustees, including the bishop of the diocese as chairman, the archdeacon of Auckland, the vicar of the cathedral parish and six others to be appointed by the Standing Committee. Although the Children’s Home Board had always reported to synod it was in no way under its control. It was decided that if the new home were to be a diocesan institution it would have to be brought under the control of synod. The board was willing that funds at present in its possession should bo handed to the ti’ustees as an endowment. The Rev'. W. E. Lush said that the first children’s home was started by Mrs. Cowie, wife of Bishop Cowie, at her own expense at a house in Brighton Road. The bill was put through the, committee stage and was read a third time. When synod continued yesterday, Archbishop Averill presiding, it was decided to forward congratulations to Archdeacon H. Williams, bishop-elect of Waiapu. APPEAL FOR FUNDS The archbishop’s special appeal for Church Extension Fund was shown to have a cash balance of £352 in the financial statement. His Grace made special reference to this fund, and he appealed for further donations to it. Mr. J. Hogben and Mr. A. B. Roberton were elected members of the Diocesan Pension Board. This morning members of Synod attended the St. John’s College Association festival at Tamaki, - and they were the guests of the warden, Canon A. W. Payne, at luncheon. This afternoon a garden party is to be held at Bishopscourt, Parnell, guests being entertained by Archbishop Averill and Mrs. Averill. Tomorrow will be observed as Synod Sunday. Holy Communion will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Archbishop Averill being the celebrant. Matins will be held at 11 o'clock, the preacher being the Rev. W. N. Panapa, Maori missioner, of Kaikohe. The preacher at evensong will be the Rev. R. B. Davison, of St. George’s Church, Thames. Synod will transact business during the afternoon and evening of Monday. A conference of clergy will be held on Tuesday morning, and they will be entertained at luncheon by Archbishop Averill and Mrs. Averill. The wives of clergy will be entertained at morning tea next Wednesday by Mrs. Averill.
