LYCEUM CLUB FUNCTION SEVERAL PRESENTATIONS A pleasant little afternoon was spent !at the Te Puke Lyceum Club on Tuesday. Club members arranged the ; afternoon in order to present the prcsi- , dent and joint secretaries with small SiftsThe entrance ball was a howti e mauve wistaria and golden poppies, while tho ciub rooms were decorated with stately bowls of fraxias in alt ' shades of pink. Mrs. B. Vercoe called on the president, Mrs. Lemon, to accept a large | bronze bowl. Airs. TVilkio and Miss j Rogers, the joint secretaries. were ! also called on to accept gifts, the former receiving a black floating bowl and the latter a bronze cigarette box. Tho tlireo guests were also presented with beautiful bouquets of sweet peas. | A competition arranged by Aliss : Kato Jamieson was won by Mrs. : Charles Bailey, who received a tea ; caddy for a prize. During the afternoon songs were , given by Alesdames T odd. Duff and Aliss Watson, Airs. Anderson acting as j tho accompanist. Airs. Gibbings’s j humorous recitation was also much ap- j predated. Tho afternoon wound up with the f singing of “For They Are Jc*lly Good ! Fellows.” j Those present were: Alesdames Young, Lemon. Wilkie. Granger. Simpson, Gash more, Hargreaves, .Wilson. I. VICTORIA LEAGUE GIRLS ENTERTAIN AT VETERANS’ HOME AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON Despite the torrential downpour of j rain on "Wednesday afternoon, a merry j party of girls belonging to the. \ ie- ; toria League Girls’ Committee went to the Veterans’ Home to while away an afternoon in music, verse and song, for the pleasure of the veterans. An excellent programme was provided, and included pianoforte solos, songs, duets, choruses, sketches, recitations and violin solos. The following members took part:— j Aliss Mavis McCulloch. Aliss Linda de j Renzv. Aliss Alarjorie Fair, Aliss Thelma St. Clair Whyte. Aliss Eileen Adkin, Aliss Kathleen Venables, Aliss : Rika Patterson. AJiss Margaret Clarke, Aliss Alizpah Hutchison, Aliss Thronson, Aliss Rountree, Aliss Rae King and Aliss Joyce Nairn. Tobacco was distributed among the ; veterans. Major Wallingford thanked the girls j for providing such a happy afternoon. Tho singing of.the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. MOUNT EDEN PARTY IN HONOUR OF NAVAL APPOINTMENT An enjoyable evening was given by j Airs. G. P. Sherwin at her home in : Wairiki Road, Alount Eden, in honour of her brother-in-law, Air. L. A. Sherwin, R.N., who has been appointed to j H.AI.S. Philomel. The hostess received her guests in j a charming frock of silver lame, re- j lieved with oriental flowers and shawl J to tone. Among the guests were: Airs. L. A. Sherwin, in moonlight blue j georgette, 'beaded in silver; Mrs Crump, wearing cameo pink georgette; j Mrs. Deverill, black georgette with scar- ; let posy; Mrs. T. Sainty. blue and pink beaded georgette; Airs. S. Jowett, flame i taffeta with gold lame and bridge coat; { Miss Joyce Sherwin, mauve georgette; ; Airs. T. A. Turner, marigold ancl black l tulle: Miss D. Atarbeck, black and silver beaded georgette: Airs. Mattson, rose ; pink taffeta and georgette: Airs. Til?aid, l'ose embossed chenille; Aliss Joan Slier- , win, mauve frilled tulle. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY MONTH’S WORK REVIEWED | The monthly meeting of the AuckI land Hospital Auxiliary Council was ! held on Wednesday. Tho president, | Airs. Kidd, was in the chair. There were also present Airs. C. J. Kirk, lion, treasurer, tho secretary. Airs. S. J. Ellis, and 18 members of the council. Reports were read from the different committees and branches. Onehunga presented another spinal chair to the infirmary, and six seagra.ss chairs for the old men in the cottage. The usual activities were carried on, and the monthly concert was a great success, there being about forty* performers. Newmarket reported that it had started to work for the Christmas Tree, ancl that another spinal chair was to be given to a. patient in hospital. Tho Alount Eden branch had been busy and during September brought in 132 garments to the depot. The city sewing circle contributed 107 garments, and is now forming a junior branch of young helpers. The purchasing ancl distribution report was read and also that of the motor excursion committee. The ways and means committee had had a very’busy month. A bridge party was held, and during the last week in September a shop in the St. James Theatre building and a stall at John Court’s corner were carried on by members of the A.H.A. and other helpers, ancl proved a great success. Last week a ball was held, under the auspices of the Auckland Jewish Ladies’ Benevolent Society in aid of the funds of the A.H.A. During the month 294 garments were distributed, also books, jam and fruit. Parcels were i received from the Birkdale Women’s ! Institute. BRIDGE PARTY AT EVELYN FIRTH HOME VICTORIA LEAGUE GIRLS On Thursday afternoon the girls’ branch of the Victoria League held its i monthly bridge party at the Evelyn Firth Home for Returned Soldiers. Prizes were won by Afr. Gordon and j Air. Chaney. Among the players were:—Aliss W. j Kent (convener), Alissses R. and D. Thomson, Aliss De. Renzy, Aliss Steven - | son, Aliss K.- Wells, Aliss Cerrutty, Aliss j Sanders.
