PAWNED DURING SPELLS OUT OF GAOL PRISON FOR THEFTS Pawning watches that he had collected from householders on the understanding that he would have them repaired resulted in Ernest Edward Cuthbertson Maxey appearing at the Police Court this morning on charges of theft, j Maxey’s explanation was that he had i been in and out of gaol so often that j he had liad no opportunity to redeem j the pawned Jewellery. J Described as a labourer, aged 48, ! Maxey was charged with stealing five | watches and attempting to steal a j ring valued at £3. The watches were valued at £l4 10s. Asked to plead, ac- | cused ruminated for a moment then I said that he could not remember all j the incidents. He had pawned some of them, but had been in and out of gaol ! so often serving short sentences that | he had not been able to redeem them. “Maxey goes round to houses asking to repair jewellery,” said ChiefDetective Hammond. “He is not a J watch-repairer himself, but he takes j the things to a jobber or pledges j them. He was trying to pawn the J ring when he was arrested. The man jin a nuisance. He has a long list.” “Yes, 75 previous convictions," 3 agreed Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. ! Maxey was anxious to know yhether j all the cases had been cleared up. “I don’t want the police after me again as soon as I get out,” he said. I Maxey was sentenced to six months’ | imprisonment to be followed by two | years’ reformative detention.
