CHINESE GARDENS
Sir, — About a year ago I wrote to The Sun calling attention to the fact that every Sunday Chinese were to be seen working in their gardens, and pointing out that, considering the barefaced manner in which these offences were committed, prosecutions were far too rare. Last week I read in The Sun that a white man, who was employed by a Chinese gardener, was fined for working in the garden on a Sunday. Apparently not content themselves with openly flouting the laws of the country the Chinese appear to be going a step farther and are using whatever labour they can obtain from the ranks of the unemployed, under Chinese conditions. In a country which prides itself on its living and working conditions this sort of thing cannot be permitted to get a hold. It is up to our Labour Department to see that the Chinese in New Zealand do as New Zealand does in these things. NATIVE BORN.
