NEW SHIPPING CHANNEL

ACCESS TO CHRISTCHURCH VIA HEATHCOTE RIVER (Special to TUB SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. A syndicate of Christchurch andj Sumner business men is said to be planning to dredge out a deep channel so that coastal vessels of up to 400 tons may be able to cross the Sumner bar and come up the estuary to the Heatbcote Bridge to unload their cargoes. The Christchurch Navigating and Trading Syndicate, as it is called, is confident that its plans will be carried out quite cheaply. The lease of a block of land near the Heathcote Arms Hotel has been obtained, and the Marine Department is said to have given permission for the use of the foreshore at Ferrymead, near tlie Heathcote Bridge, and for the building of a wharf.
