FIRE IN WAREHOUSE
BOILING LIQUID EXPLODES GREAT DAMAGE DONE Press Association DUNEDIN, Tuesday. A spectacular fire in the warehouse of Messrs. A. E. Usherwood and Company, on the foreshore, this afternoon, resulted in several thousands pounds’ worth of damage to the building and stock. The premises are used for the manufacture of a wool branding fluid, and on the top floor there were three 40-gallon vats of fluid boilr g. An unaccountable explosion occurred in one and set fire to the others. Inflammable materials, such as resin, tallow and turpentine, proved excellent fuel, and the fire was raging fiercely before the brigade arrived. The whole of the top floor was gutted, but the brigade was successful in preventing the spread of the flames to the ground floor, where more inflammable goods were stored. An exact estimate of the damage cannot be given yet. The building was covered in the United Office for £5,000 and the stock was insured in the same ofliee.
