DOMAIN TENNIS COURTS
ASSOCIATION FURTHERS SCHEME Application to the City Council will be made by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association for the area in the Outer Domain on which it is proposed to lay down new tennis courts. Sixty delegates attended a meeting last evening, when the question was raised by the president, Mr. E. Hickson. A long discussion took place and objections to the scheme were heard. An amendment to defer the question until it had been fully considered by the clubs was defeated and the president’s motion to open negotiations with the City Council was carried by a substantial majority. Air. Hickson, Air. E. W. Griffiths and Air. L. W. Swan were appointed a committee to approach the council. Addressing the meeting, Air. Hickson explained the association’s need for more courts for inter-club play and for children’s competitions on Saturday mornings. If the scheme were carried out, probably six grass courts and six chip would be made available and the area should be adequate for the present needs of the association. By making a small charge to public users during the week and on Saturday mornings, revenue would be gained to make the running of the courts financial, Air. Hickson added. The outlay would be comparatively small and he was certain the association had an admirable opportunity to prepare for growing demands. There was a possibility of letting at least four courts to the public on Saturday afternoons. It was pointed out by Air. Griffiths that club levies would have to be increased, whether ths scheme were carried out or not. He saw the possibility of a profit in conducting the courts.
An objection made was the effect on small clubs of an increased levy, and Air. A. K. Turner, for Eden and Epsom Club, suggested that the time had not arrived for the expenditure of funds gathered by the association’s art union. Rules drawn up for inter-club competitions were passed, and three of the Stanley Streets courts were relet to the Auckland Club. St. Luke’s Club was granted affiiliation, and Air. L. Rogers was elected an additional Auckland delegate to the New Zealand Association. A committee of ten was elected to control the Auckland championships proposed to be. held on December 26, 27 and 28, and the handicap tournament.
