DEFENCE DEFAULTERS

PROSECUTIONS AGAINST LARGE BATCH EXEMPTION REQUESTS For failing to register under the Defence Act, George W. Brown was fined £1 and costs at the Police Court this afternoon. Defendant stated that he had been only 18 months in the country and pleaded ignorance of his obligations. He had received no notice from the Defence Department. For a similar offence Stanley C. Purslove was fined £1 and costs. Andrew Smith, who failed to notify a change of address, was fined 10s and costs. A charge of failing to attend parades was adjourned until February 12. On charges of failing to attend drill, Samuel B. Stocken and W. E. Byrt were fined £1 and costs. Applications for exemption from parade by W. E. Byrt, J. N. McDougall, W. M. McDougall, A. Miller and A. M. Richards were adjourned until November 13. *'We shall see what Parliament does about this,” said the magistrate. “These are the Presbyterians, I understand. If we hear nothing within the month I will deal with them then according to my own judgment.” J. H. Davies, a Seventh Day Adventist, was granted exemption, following his expressed willingness to do alternative service. Similar action was taken with applications made by L. H. Hay, M. Porteous, G. W. Pearson, R. E. Maberley and P. J. Wright.
