AVONDALE WOMEN’S CLUB

GARDEN PLOT OPENED A PLEASANT AFTERNOON A pleasing function under the 1 auspices of the Avondale Women’s J Club took place on Saturday afternoon, j when Cr. Alice Hasten performed the ! opening ceremony of a small garden j plot, the ground having been presented i for the purpose by Mrs. Armanasco, to j the residents of Avondale South. Mrs. J. W. Jvealy presided over the gathering, and gave a short history of the origin of the gift, and the work of designing and decoration which was carried out by an enthusiastic band of residents under the able direction of Mr. W. H. Pendlebury. The president then introduced Miss Hasten, who after making some rather humorous references to previous visits to the district, spoke of its rapid progress, and congratulated the women of the club upon the excellent work done in connection /with the present improvements. “All real garden places.” said Miss hasten, "are precious, first because of their memories, and secondly because of their flowers, and that is' why our : own particular little plot is rich" with ! a wealth that is not in the essence of ; more stately places.” Miss. Basten then foi*mally declared the reserve open for public use. Miss Newton proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Basten. and also respondded on behalf of Mrs. Armanasco. | Air. Pendlebury also spoke. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. j D. Kealey, and concluded a very ] successful afternoon.
