UNITY IS VITAL

MANUFACTURERS’ MOVF FOR FEDERATION AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION -The establishment of an effective federation in Wellington to act in the interests of the manufacturers of the Dominion." This is the objective of the Auckland Manufacturers Association ■which instructed its president. M r ’ George Finn, yesterday, to co-ordinate with executives from other centre, when the presidents throughout X,* Zealand meet in conference in Weu. ington on October 22. A report was presented by Mr. w D. Muun on the result of his canvass of the Southern districts. He" said that on the assumption that an effective federation would be formed 73 p er t ent, of the manufacturers he had interviewed had been written up a J members. He considered that committees 10 direct local affairs should b e established in other centres. The majority favoured the Wellington plan for the federation, he declared Declaring that he whole-heartedly supported an effective federation of manufacturers. Mr. Mills-Palmer claimed that the present organisation had not been effective in anv wav Manufacturers were producing ha'f the Dominion's wealth, he asserted and yet their voice politically w a , only a squeak. We are not making our voice heard. ' he added; "at prevent we are doing nothing. He proposed that the president should co-ordinate with the executives of other centres to establish an effective federation in Wellington and that the Auckland Association should pledge its fund- ro the extent of £3OO annually for this i purpose. "It is essential there should be an effective organisation in Wellington tn make representations to the Government and to keep the provincial organj sations up to the mark.” stated another member. The president, Mr. U. Finn, emphasised that £3OO would not cover the expenses of the federation. He preferred to have the branch organisation brought to the highest state of efficiency first. The manufacturer* would then be in a position to control and direct the operations of the Dominion organisation. The association's ; own affairs were not yet on as satisfactory a footing as desired. Mr. Mills-Palmer commented that the £3OO annually was suggested merely as Auckland's contribution to the federation. After further discussion, an amendment proposed by Mr. F. X. Am,bier and seconded by Mr. F. W. Petterd | was carried. This resolution authorised the president to co-ordinate with other presidents to have an effective federation established in Wellington, but eliminated any pledge in regard : to contributions.
