Havering’s Sprint

RACING AT ELLERSLIE Sea Cob’s Success THERE was a fair attendance at the concluding day’s racing of the spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Clnb at Ellerslie today, the course being in wonderful order. The consistent Hea Cob won the opening event—Xormanby Handicap—in good style from Arikitoa and the favourite, Motere. Elysianor succeeded in winning the Manubau Hurdles from the first-day big dividend payer, Catonian, who again put up a good showing. The Epsom Handicap saw a fine finish in which Havering defeated the public fancy, Silvermine. who narrowly heat Awarere for second money. The three-year-old Hunting Cry, who finished third on Saturday in the Guineas, accounted for a good field of older opponents in the Kir g Edward Memorial Handicap, in which Vertigern and High Pitch filled the respective minor places.

Mountain Guide, Sea Cob, Arikitoa, Some Lady. Alloy and Motere. Brampton and Kawainga led across the top and into the stiaight from Mountain Guide, Kawainga. Sea Cob. Arikitoa and Alloy, with Motere last. At the distance Hea Cob had hit the front from Arikitoa, while Motere was putting in a run on the inside. Sea Cob easily held his own and won by a length from Arikitoa and Motere. who were on terms, and Ourrajong was fourth. Then came Brampton. Alloy. King’s Guard £973 and Elysianor £744 carried the money, with the first days winner, Catonian entrusted with £472. Golden Wedding and Kamehameha were asked to concede the field a start. Catonian going to the front early from Ramblin' Kid, Elysianor, Ah Wera, Horomea and Kings Guard. Atareria blundered at the third fence and was later pulled up. Catonian was clear passing the stands from JJlysianor, Ah Wera, King's Guard (who fell here), Ramblin Kid, Horomea and Golden Wedding. At the second to last fence Elysianor outjumped Catonian and ran up to him. the pair turning for home 'veil ahead of Horomea, Golden Wedding. Kamehameha and Glenotus. Glysianor finally won under restraint by a length from Catonian, with Horomea a length away third and Golden Wedding fourth Next were Glenotus, Karaehamaha, Ah Wera and Karamu, these being the only others to finish. Handicap, than High Finance, but tiiere was good backing for Havering £062. From an even break, Awarere was first to show out just in advance of Billikins and High Finance, but at the five furlong disc Billikins had got to the lead from Silvermine, Knightlike, Awarere, Kingfield and High Finance. Approaching the home bend Knightlike hit the front and was followed into the straight by Billikins, Kingfield, Havering, Awarere, Silvermine, High Finance, Takutama, Value and Lady’s Boy. When the final effort commenced Havering ran through and although strongly challenged by the top-weight and Awarere, won nicely by three-quarters of a length, from the favourite, with Awarere half a head away third. Close up came Takutama, Billikins and Value (who was disappointed in trying to get through on the rails), with Knightlike, Kingfield, Roi de Val and High Finance following. Star Stranger £1,558 was a good first choice for the King Edward Handicap, with Fiuthair £l,OlB and Amor £1,014, evenly supported. The winner turned up in the three-year-old Hunting Cry, whol carried £787. Star Stranger, Singleton, Vertigern and Bennie were slow to get going, and Hunting Cry led past the stands and out of the straight from Piuthair, Amor, High Pitch, In the Shade, LucyRose, Bennie, Corinax, Barometer, Star Stranger, Singleton and Vertigern. Along the back Amor was out with Hunting Cry in the van, their nearest attendants being Bennie, Piuthair, Corinax and High Pitch. Crossing the top Bennie joined the leading pair and the two turned for home just in front of High Pitch. Barometer, Singleton, Vertigern and Piuthair. At the distance Vertigern made his effort and although he made a hard drive, the three-year-old Hunting Cry stuck, to his task well and gained the decision by a length and a-quarter. Half a length back came High Pitch, followed by i Singleton, In the Shade, Corinax, Piul thair, Star Stranger and Desert Glow. ONEHUNGA STEEPLECHASE Of £400; about 3 miles 4—LADY SPALPEEN, 10.5, J.
